What You Need To Know About‘The Great Food Truck’ Race

On August 15, 2010 the reality television series The Great Food Truck Race aired its first episode on the Food Network. The difference between this show and all of the other culinary shows out there is that this show has an unusual twist – instead of solely having people compete, the show uses food trucks as the main competitors – hence The Great Food Truck Race.

With southern chef and gentleman Tyler Florence as the show’s host, it has been quite successful and is already on its way to a third season.

The show consists of a number of specialty food trucks (seven in season one and eight in seasons two and three) who compete against each other for a period of time (six weeks in season one, seven in seasons two and three).

The food trucks start in an unknown location which is changed with each new season. The competitors and their food trucks pass through a number of cities all over the country and finish the competition on the east coast.

Each food truck team has a driver and two crew members who are responsible for:

  • Driving to each new city and finding the bestselling locations
  • Cooking all of the food
  • Buying all of the ingredients for the food
  • Taking orders from the hungry customers
  • Dealing with publicity and getting noticed

The entire team participates in the success of their food truck but in the end the winner is the one who has the most street smarts and the best selling ability.

The goal of these specialty food trucks is to sell more than their competitors by the end of the week. After the sales are calculated the truck that sold the least amount of money is eliminated and the others advance to the next week and to a new city.

As an incentive the food truck that makes the most money has a chance to win a prize, which sometimes includes a trip. After the six weeks is over (seven in season two and three) the winning food truck is determined and returns home with a cash prize of $50,000 ($100,000 in the second season).

It has been announced that The Great Food Truck Race will begin playing on Food Network UK. The show will launch its first season on June 6, 2011 and will surprisingly be using the American version of the show instead of creating its own UK version.
