Lobster Is Turning Up On Food Truck Menus

Lobster is usually considered a delicacy to be served at special occasions only. But nutrition gurus say lobster should be consumed more often because it is such a healthy meat. Tasty and lean, lobster provides the body with much-needed protein – about 20 grams in a 3-ounce serving.

Urban dwellers in some areas of the country can find well-priced lobster dishes on local food trucks, and that trend is growing.

The Red Hook Food Trucks bring the taste of Maine to Washington, D.C. Every day the trucks serve up Maine-style lobster rolls on grilled butter buns, which can be enjoyed with Maine Root Soda. Red Hook also sells New England clam chowder and apple cider from what has become known to local foodies as “the Lobster Truck.”

In New York City, Luke’s Lobster serves city dwellers looking for genuine Maine lobster at a reasonable price. Owner Luke Holden grew up on the coast of Maine and worked in his father’s seafood company. When he moved to New York, he couldn’t find an ideal lobster roll, so he opened his own small restaurant which has grown into a chain. In May 2012, the business added Nauti, a mobile food truck that serves lobster, clam and shrimp rolls in the Maine tradition.

In LA, lobster lovers enjoy the Lobster Truck, which dishes up traditional lobster rolls made from fresh lobster flown in from New England several times a week. They are served with a choice of butter or mayo. Diners also may choose the truck’s crab rolls or lobster bisque and sides like Cape Cod potato chips and Whoopie Pie.

Cousins Maine Lobster, a restaurant inside a Pasadena club, also has a food truck business. The operation is owned by cousins Sabin Lomac and Jim Tselikis, who were raised on steaming red lobsters in Southern Maine. They have infused Maine family traditions in their California food business. In addition to a lobster BLT, the cousins serve fried clams, clam chowder, lobster pot pie and even lobster ice cream.
